MOBILE NEWS : The war is over! Intel agrees to pay AMD $1.25 billion in antitrust settlement

Posted by SRINU

It’s either Intel are too often being caught red-handed or their lawyers are total crap. The company just lost another 1.25 billion US dollars, which should go to its main rival AMDIn short, Intel have promised to behave themselves and pay the fine, while Advanced Micro Devices have agreed to drop the antitrust lawsuit filed in 2004. So offering inducements to customers and retailers in exchange to make them dealing with Intel and forget about AMD is now completely out of line. Did they really need to go to court (and lose twice) to learn that? We remind you that some time ago the European regulators filed a separate case that ended with another 1.5 billion US dollars fine for Intel. Intel is still appealing on that but we cannot see them achieving anything but delaying the inevitable. And just last week New York attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against Intel that accuses the company of bribery.
We doubt that Intel and AMD will become best friends anytime soon but the companies promised to turn a new page in their relationship (”fierce but fair competition” they say). Yeah, that will last!

MOBILE NEWS : NOKIA, WHERE IS THE NEXT N91

Posted by SRINU

Our audio quality test points out the iPhone 3GS as the contemporary audio quality reference. But that was until we had the chance to test a now elderly Nokia N91, which I accidentally sourced brand new from a local mobile shop. I came upon it by chance as part of a strange series of events that deserve their own blog post altogether. But I digress. Ever since Day One, the Nokia N91 has been praised with impeccable reputation of the best sounding mobile phone ever produced (the majority of stand alone portable music players can hardly compete with it either). It has nothing to do with loudness (though boy, that thing IS loud!), but it’s the audio reproduction that draws audiophiles (and me as well).
I know, it’s too big a phone to lug around all day and it’s even not that likeable by today’s standards of thin profiles and touchscreens. But I still find it as attractive as I fancied it years ago on all those billboards and magazine ads. Heck, it doesn’t even have a QVGA resolution screen, but who cares about the screen. It’s the music soul that sets it apart.

6 ways to get real 3D technology for home use this Christmas

Posted by SRINU

It’s time for some 3D action from the comfort of your home. 3D cinema may have been around for more than a century (yeah, really!), but it’s only now that it ventures in our homes in a way that’s relatively affordable and easy way to digest. And it’s not just movies – can you imagine playing a first person shooter in real 3D immersion?

You’ve all played the so-called 3D games, you’ve all seen 3D animation, but 3D films are a different animal all together. The FPS games and movies are “3D” in the sense that they are set in a three dimensional world. In addition to moving left or right, forward and back, there’s the third degree of motion – moving up and down.
But regardless of the number of directions you can move in, the image is still displayed on a flat surface, be it the computer monitor or the cinema screen. The problem here is that there no real perception of depth. Sure, you can tell how far things are thanks to perspective but that’s about it, depth is just an illusion.
Enter 3D movies, where you perceive “depth” just like you would in the real world. Normally each eye gets a slightly modified image of the natural setting around us due to the physical distance between them. The brain compbines the two images and presto – there’s real depth. It’s what our minds call 3D. And it’s what we’re after in this post – a small venture inside the 3D technology for home use.
Serving each eye with a different image is what’s behind most technologies for displaying 3D content (and trust us, there are a lot of these). Showing each eye a slightly different image confuses the brain enough to think it’s seeing real depth.

MOBILE NEWS : Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 goes on video again

Posted by SRINU

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is one of the hottest names of the season and understandably none of its public appearances can go unnoticed. We just stumbled upon a new video demo of the handset, showing a much better side of it. The XPERIA X10 unit that the guys over at Wayerless took for a spin has much improved performance compared to the one we saw at the official announcement event in London. It now looks more like a 1GHz CPU-powered device, and less like one that has a hamster running inside to power the whole thing. Check out the video after the break. It’s in Spanish but the handset does most of the talking you need anyway.

MOBILE NEWS : ITG xpPhone gets Windows 7, 120GB storage and 5MP camera

Posted by SRINU

The ITG xpPhone that we already told you about is going to come in more than one flavor. The future users will be able to pick the OS, CPU, storage and RAM memory as well as the display to create a device that suits their needs the best.
The handset will be available with Windows XP, MS DOS or Windows 7 (there goes the nice name) OS and AMD Super Mobile CPU. The options for the CPU speed are over and under 1GHz but the manufacturer doesn’t quote exact numbers. The storage memory ranges from 8GB SSD to 120 GB HDD and the RAM will be 512MB, 1GB or 2GB. MOBILE NEWS : A whole range of Dell Mini 3 smartphones

Posted by SRINU

After giving up their PocketPC business several years ago Dell are ready for a come back but this time they will try to conquer a much wider field. Now it's as official as it gets: Dell have just confirmed their plans to produce a range of smartphones under the brand name Dell Mini 3. Judging on Dell's netbooks naming convention, which takes after the screen size, it's a good guess that the new Dell smartphones will all have 3 inch screens.
And when it comes to Dell future smartphones, we have to resort to guessing, as the company did not announce any hardware specs whatsoever. Those will be announced "...when devices are available in stores." Dell marketing obviously can't get over their computer marketing strategies (much like Acer and their newbie attempts, as well).
Anyway, rumors on Dell smartphones have been circulating for the past 2 years or so and a few months back the Dell Mini 3i was even sighted during an event organized by China Mobile. Back then Dell called it only "a proof of concept" but today it just can't get any more real than that.
The first company across the globe to get the Dell Mini 3 is world's largest mobile operator, namely China Mobile. Their version of Dell Mini 3 will run the OPhone OS (basically that's the well-known Android OS with some minor customizations) and is expected to become available sometime this month.

MOBILE NEWS : HTC HD2 is now available through Vodafone UK

Posted by SRINU

HTC HD2 is now available in Vodafone UK. You can get one for free on 24 month contract and 35 pounds tariff or on 18 month commitment at 40 pounds tariff. The offers seem similar to iPhone plans through Orange and O2 so we guess Christmas shopping will pose quite some tough choices for the gadget lover.
The monstrous HTC HD2 is now available in the Vodafone UK network and you can have yours for free on either 18 or 24 month contract. A free HD2 applies to the 35 pound monthly tariff and the 24 month contract, while if you opt for the 18 month contract, you'll have to opt for a 40 pound monthly plan.
Truth be told, those offers are similar to the Orange iPhones's, so in the Christmas hype all will be up to the device, not the operator or tariff.

MOBILE NEWS : HTC HD2

Posted by SRINU

The dragon in the HTC camp has awoken, ladies and gentlemen, and it's time it shows what it's capable of. Be it a dragon, or a lion, the HTC HD2, codenamed HTC Leo, is truly a spectacular device. It seems to have all modern mobile technologies in its pocket, bridging the gap between phones and tablets.

HTC are pushing the boundaries of the impossible by fitting the 4.3-inch screen in a phone smaller than the Toshiba TG01, which was the first Snapdragon-based device ever to be released. HD2 is certainly a feat of engineering and something to really look up to.
Now that it has just hit the market, the HD2 is bound to make some serious waves in the high-end smartphones pool and we guess many of you would probably be checking it out this holiday season. And you would be right to do so. Let's go over its impeccable specs sheet one more time:
General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 900/2100 MHz, HSDPA, HSUPA
Form factor: Touchscreen bar phone
Dimensions: 120.5 x 67 x 11 mm, 157 g
Display: 4.3" 65K-color TFT capacitive touchscreen, 800 x 480 pixels WVGA, multi-touch support
Platform: Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon 1 GHz processor
OS: Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional; HTC Sense user interface (formerly TouchFLO 3D)
Memory: 512MB storage, 448MB RAM, microSD card slot, 2GB card included in the retail box
Camera: 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with touch focus and dual-LED flash; VGA@30 video recording
Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, standard microUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, FM radio
Battery: 1,230 mAh Li-Ion; up to 6 h 20 min talk time, 490 h standby, 8 h video playback, 12 h music playback
Misc: Built-in accelerometer and digital compass, proximity and ambient light sensors, carrying pouch in box, optional car kit
Software: CoPilot navigation software (trial version), Wi-Fi router software, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter integration, HTC Footprints
The HTC HD2 most certainly feels great in hand - the quality of the used materials is nice and the slim bezel around the screen is almost as spectacular as the slim profile. For the fist five minutes you can't help but simply sit there and just stare at the amazing screen.

But with touch smartphones getting screens that large sooner or later ergonomics had to be sacrificed. We somehow thought that the original Touch HD had almost crossed the line, but the HD2 has definitely crossed over. Reaching your thumb to the opposite angle of the screen is quite a task and it's not really comfortable to use the phone single-handedly. But we guess many of you would find the compromise with ergonomics quite worth it.

MOBILE NEWS : Samsung B7300 OmniaLITE

Posted by SRINU

It's business as usual on the WinMo front and all the action seems to be around the upper end of the pricing scale. Impressive as those top PocketPCs may be, they are hardly the stuff that makes the sales meters tick and bring the profits that fuel the R&D machine. Samsung B7300 OmniaLITE is one of the very few that dare to try and bring Windows Mobile to the masses. Budget PocketPCs are not unheard of but what makes OmniaLITE different is WinMo 6.5. The compact full-touch handset has the essentials perfectly covered, and sprinkled with a few nice extras too. But most importantly, the price tag won't make you wince

MOBILE NEWS : LG GD510 Pop review: Mobile pop culture

Posted by SRINU

It looks like LG have been playing their own version of will it blend. There's no need to tell you they're not playing for fun - they're rather trying to squeeze some more cash off a couple of hot-selling handsets. So, here's the deal. Get your blender, throw in an LG Arena and a Cookie and set the speed to "budget". And there you have it - an LG GD510 Pop - ready to be served to the happy masses. The "pop" LG are going for is definitely "popular", as opposed to the "popstar stuff" some of you may have hoped for.
You can go ahead and call it the new Cookie, or the low-cost Arena, but the LG Pop is quite obviously keen to have its own purpose and personality. The optional battery cover fitting a solar panel and the all-round eco-friendliness are one way for it to stand on its own two feet as a phone. Apart from that, the Pop is just another midrange touchscreen. And this is by no means a guilty verdict. The LG Cookie used to be just another touchscreen too. Certainly not now - over 5 million units sold later. The Pop is perhaps setting its hopes high as well. Let's see if the classic unisex design, the feature mix and the affordable price tag can do it for it too

The first Dual SIM phone is the Samsung B5722. It's a touchscreen bar - similar in looks and specs to the Samsung Preston. It however relies only on quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity, without the 3G, and the secondary SIM card is dual-band only. Both cards can be used for data transfers

O2 Ready to Support NFC Mobile Payments

Posted by SRINU

O2 UK are now set to support NFC mobile payments, but are holding off on doing so for the moment. NFC technology allows for short range communication between devices and is being used to trial mobile payment systems using mobile phones. The user would swipe his mobile phone near an NFC terminal, which would debit the account on his phone for the relevant amount of money.

O2’s trial of the technology began in 2007 and was met with generally good feedback. However, for such a system to be successful it would require a critical mass of networks, manufacturers, banks and retailers to support it hence O2’s decision not to dive straight in and begin rolling out devices straight away.

Tesco Mobile, one of the many MVNOs operating in the UK market, has sparked a potential price war by announcing a ne wunlimited tariff. The new tariff will be a SIM only deal and will offer unlimited calls, unlimited texts and unlimited data for £30 per month. The only stipulation is that users are restricted to £500 worth of usage each month, but even so this seems to be a fantastically good deal. These sort of unlimited tariffs aren’t common in the UK with the only ones being available offered to certain business customers. The five main networks may now find themselves on the backfoot and hopefully, for the consumer, they either match or at least try and compete with this offer. Tesco Mobile are putting the tariff forward as a recession beating measure and with the promise of unlimited everything it will probably do good business.

Economist Replaces Your Newsstand Guy With a Cellphone

Posted by SRINU

In a potential advance for the forces of paid content, The Economist is introducing a trial program today that lets New Yorkers use their cellphones to order overnight home delivery of the new issue at the regular newsstand price. AdAge reports.

“New Yorkers who have signed up for weekly texts announcing each issue’s topics will also receive a URL for a web page they can visit to order the issue. Those who order by 9 p.m. are guaranteed a hand-delivered copy by 6 a.m. the next morning — in time to beat the commute. The weekly texts go out on Thursday afternoons, meaning recipients can get overnight copies before newsstands get them at about 9 a.m.

n England, where The Economist first tried the approach two months ago, people who have preregistered can just reply to the text messages to get their overnight copies. The Economist hopes to have that simpler system in place by the time it widens the New York trial to cover the entire U.S. “

AT&T Price Confirmed : Garmin-Asus Nuvifone G60

The Garmin-Asus Nuvifone is vaporware no more! Boy Genius has unveiled some information about several upcoming AT&T smartphones, the G60 among them. The nuvifone G60 is a collaboration between the famed GPS manufacturer Garmin and PC-manufacturer Asus. It will cost $299 with a 2-year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate. That’s a bit pricey for even a high-end smartphone. The G60 has a 3 megapixel camera, a 3.5″ touchscreen, a Linux-based OS, 3G capability, and a Garmin GPS. To be honest, the nuvifone doesn’t sound quite as awesome now as it did a year ago. That said, having a quality GPS built-in will save users the expense of a TomTom car set. No release date has yet been announced, but it’s expected out before the end of October

iPhone mostly Ignored in China

Posted by SRINU

Elsewhere in the world, while people might flock whenever a new version of the Jesus phone is released, the Chinese seems to have largely ignored the device.
Following the much-discussed launch of the iPhone on China's second largest mobile network, China Unicom, last week, only 5000 have been sold. This, in the country boasting of the world's largest mobile subscriber base, is nothing short of an embarrassment for Apple who has always known to cite the sales of the iPhones in millions right from the first week of its release in other parts of the world.
While questions are being raised as to why the iPhone has failed to make any impact in the Chinese market, many observers have made it clear that the reasons behind this range from the prohibitive pricing of the device to the crippling of various features on the device might have forced users to ignore the device for better equipped me-too products. This is apart from the grey market scene, which thrives in China and is being termed a culprit by consultant iSuppli. China is also known for pretty well disguised iPhone clones that actually boast of more features than what the much more expensive iPhone can.
Nevertheless, it has been largely a similar trend in India as well. In both markets, consumers are more price conscious and Apple's over the top pricing of the iPhone ensures lesser uptake of iPhones.

Latest News : Sybase smooths path for I Phones today

Posted by SRINU

Sybase is extending its Afaria mobile-device management platform and database software to the Apple iPhone, taking advantage of new enterprise features in Version 3.1 of the iPhone's software to give IT departments more control and capabilities on the popular handset.
Though many enterprise employees bring iPhones into the office and rely on them for personal communications, the device originally caught on as a consumer gadget for music, Web browsing and entertainment applications, and has only gradually made inroads as a workplace tool. Going on sale in the middle of this month, Sybase's Afaria 6.5 will finally give administrators the kinds of controls they have had previously for mobile platforms such as Symbian, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1, Research In Motion BlackBerry and PalmOS.
Apple's recent iPhone 3.1 release added the capability to lock down certain settings on a device so the user can't change them using the phone's configuration utility, said Mark Jordan, senior product manager for Afaria. That allowed Sybase to give enterprise IT departments the power to do things such as block applications, define the required password strength and lock down Wi-Fi and VPN (virtual private network) settings. Administrators can now establish a trusted relationship between Afaria and the employee's phone using a certificate, he said.
With the new Afaria, enterprises can make and change settings on employees' iPhones over the air based on overall policies for certain departments, job descriptions and other criteria. Among other capabilities, they can also require device authentication for access to a corporate directory and set up compliance reporting on the employee's use of the phone.
Sybase announced Afaria's iPhone capabilities on Tuesday at the iPhone Developer Summit in Santa Clara, California. Also on Tuesday, it announced tools for the Sybase SQL Anywhere database to be used for synchronization of data between an iPhone application and a back-end database. Using SQL Anywhere, internal developers and software vendors can build in bi-directional synchronization between an on-device app and relational databases including Sybase, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 and MySQL. This frees employees from having to depend on the cellular data connection to get work done while on the road, Jordan said. There is a beta test program now open for SQL Anywhere for iPhone.

Mobile termination charges may be cut

The government is considering a reduction in mobile termination charges by next year, a move that is expected to bring down call rates further.
India already has the lowest call rates across the world and the recent schemes announced by mobile operators on per second billing has taken this to as low as 1 paisa per second. Mobile termination charge is paid by a mobile operator to another on whose network the call ends.

As mentioned earlier, this page (and the rest of the browser) looks exactly similar to Opera Mini 5. The speed dial links are editable and you can choose what sites you want there for quick access. Opera Mobile supports inline editing and packs a very usable QWERTY keyboard for touch screen devices. T-Mobile Reports Voice, Data Service Outage for 5% of Customers

Posted by SRINU

the U.S. wireless- phone unit of Deutsche Telekom AG, reported a service outage last evening on its voice and data network.
The company deployed teams to fix the disruption, Bellevue, Washington-based T-Mobile reported on its Web site.
“We’re making good progress restoring voice and messaging service to affected customers,” T-Mobile said on its Web site. “Approximately 5 percent of T-Mobile customers are experiencing service disruptions.” The outages began yesterday at about 5:30 p.m. New York time.
This is at least the second service disruption in the past two months for the wireless carrier. Customers who owned Sidekick phones lost data stored on their handsets after a server went down last month. Some customers still had lost data as of Oct. 31.
T-Mobile, which competes with Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. for mobile sales, reported a 2.3 percent decline in revenue in the second quarter as customers’ average monthly bills fell. The company is attracting subscribers who spend less on voice and is relying increasingly on sales of data plans for growth, the company said in August.
